Summer Institute

I did see this on one list serv or another. Now that I have taken a longer look at the objectives I am thinking this has some compelling potential, especially for intermediate and secondary contexts. The content however, contends with more of the social interaction piece and less with the traditional components of comprehension and production. I am compelled to learn more about that, but wonder if it is the right fit for some of our components.

Strategies for Success with Literacy is a curriculum that combines research-based strategies from the fields of literacy, service learning, civic development, and social and emotional learning.  Its valued-added approach helps students become more academically civically engaged; acquire traits associated with positive character; develop civic knowledge and skills, and increase their literacy abilities in concrete and replicable ways.

Specific objectives include helping youth:
  • Participate in a respectful community - whether in school, youth group, or in a civic setting
  • Improve and strengthen study and homework skills
  • Become more effective in their use of time
  • Develop better understanding and use of the language of learning and literacy
  • Acquire greater literacy-related knowledge and skills
  • Create more mutually supportive and respectful relationships
  • Have a greater understanding of the foundation of friendships
  • Contribute to activities that benefit others
  • Develop competence in making deliberate responsible choices
  • Have great confidence and competence in their ability to meet challenges
  • Strengthen knowledge about response-ability and response to conflict
  • Perceive "change" as a process to embrace and have the skills to be a constructive change agent
  • Apply learning to a novel situation related to contributing to the common good
Participants receive a Strategies for Success with Literacy Tote that includes Teacher and Student Guides, and 10 additional books and a CD-ROM that are integral to the curriculum as they reinforce service learning methodologies and high level literacy skills.  The resource totes are FREE for New York State participants.
